My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting Jonathan at Ballynihinch Castle as we were preparing to do a Self Guided tour of the Beats. Jonathan provided great guidance to my wife and I helping us pick fly patterns and the best position on the Beat we had chosen. Later in the day we ran across Jonathan and his client who were fishing Beat 1 and his client had just landed a nice hold over Salmon. Despite the fact he was guiding another client, he took the time to come over multiple times and instruct my husband and I on the best ways to fish this area and he provided us some of his recommended flies and casting instructions which really helped us to figure the system out. Throughout all of this Jonathan asked for nothing, was extremely professional and pleasant and was invaluable source of information. If Jonathan treats anglers whom he isn't guiding with such kindness and respect, I can only imagine that his clients are in for a fantastic day of fishing. He knew the most beautiful, pristine spot where we caught several trout on the fly--just the three of us next to a field of sheep and against the backdrop of stunning hills. My husband and I had been flyfishing before but Johnathan was helpful (and patient) in improving our technique, teaching us about the different flies he'd tied himself, and generally being a joy to be around. He coached my technique to land a sea trout . John has such knowledge of where to fish with the wind and local knowledge it was a joy to be out with him. i strongly recommend him as a tip top fisherman. i honestly donāt think you could find better.
